Experience

I have been teaching English as a second language since 2012, when I earned an undergraduate TESOL certificate and completed an internship at an intensive language institute. After completing that program, I moved to Syracuse, New York, to earn my Master's degree in Linguistic Studies and a graduate-level certification in TESOL. While I was in graduate school, I taught university courses in English as a second language and also gained experience by volunteering in community adult education programs. I relocated to Texas after graduating, and I currently teach ESL at Lone Star College. I also have years of experience in English-language assessment as an exam rater for the TOEFL, TOEIC, and SAT tests. My education and experience have provided me with a deep knowledge of the English language and of effective teaching methods. While I particularly enjoy helping students grasp the complexities of English grammar, I am also experienced in reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction. As your tutor, I will assess your language abilities and develop appropriate needs-based objectives to help you reach your goals as quickly as possible. I work with students of all levels, from beginner to advanced, and I am able to offer personalized tutoring in conversational, academic, and business English. Although I specialize in adult ESL, I do have experience tutoring younger learners, and I welcome students of all ages. I love teaching, and I love the English language. I have had the privilege of working with students from all over the world, and watching them make gains in their language abilities is such a joy. There is no greater reward than having students tell me how amazed they are by their progress in my courses, and I am humbled to have been a part of their journeys.

Hobbies

I love spending time outdoors, whether that is hiking in the mountains of my native Colorado or riding my bike through the forests of my adopted home of Southeast Texas. I am a lifelong bookworm and would likely live in a library if that were an option. I love sharing my passion for reading with my nearly 2-year-old daughter. Her delight in the simple stories that we share teaches me so much about the small joys that make life meaningful. I have a deep interest in current events and politics, and I find that topics from the daily news provide excellent material for English lessons. I enjoy presenting various topics in an objective manner in order to provide interesting and relevant content for class discussions. I also enjoy travel and have been privileged to visit areas of interest throughout the United States, Canada, and the Middle East. I hope to be able to travel to many other areas in the future, and in the meantime, I enjoy being able to "travel" the world by interacting with my students and learning about their cultures.
